King Scores Rare Football Double over Huron Heights.
According to alumni records, only once in our history, 1984, has King ever captured both the Junior and Senior division foot- ball titles in the same year. Twenty six years ago, the Jr. "Green Machine" easily handled Huron 27-12, while the Senior Golden Invaders ** edged Markham 1-0 in the rain. This time around, on Saturday, Nov 13th, the weather was much kinder. Junior coaches Murray Miller and Brian Metropolit put themselves into the record books by capturing a fourth consecutive Jr. title with a 42-14 pasting of the previously unbeaten Huron Heights Warriors. Metropolit has never lost a championship game while at King, and ironically, is a product of the Huron program. Not to be outdone, Jeff Masterson and Brad Matwijec turned the tables on an also-undefeated Huron squad by shutting out their opponents 28-0, thus guaranteeing the afternoon sweep. How gratifying was it to see Mike Mallory [a Huron grad] assisting again? And there were the Honey brothers, Ray and Phil, back on the sidelines and putting back into a program which allowed them to showcase their considerable talents many years ago under the watchful eyes of coaches such as Don Archer, Ed Serjeantson, Rob Wright, Ross McClure, Tom Ellison, Ron Bonham, Mike Chvalevich and others. In the stands and cheering loudly were many, many former players and current staff. It was an afternoon to cherish.
